A Familiar Fairytale : Reimagined and Revisited
“The Princess and the Pea” is a traditional fairytale that is well known and loved. It explores themes of sensitivity, and the quest of seeking perfection. Since creating this painting, I’ve spoken to numerous people who had parents nickname them the “Princess and the Pea”, due to their need and desire for things to be just right when getting tucked into bed. Like many of them, I’ve learned to work with my sensitive nature as I’ve gotten older, and release some of the internal judgement that I’ve held towards myself in the past.
As the second part of the title, “The Weight of Invisible Objects” suggests, this painting was created for an adult who’s looking back at their childhood, with an understanding that’s taken years to cultivate, that seemingly “invisible” moments, experiences and factors can have a very real impact.
The white rabbit perched atop a mountain of whimsical mattresses, blankets and pillows, represents curiosity and the unknown - going down the rabbit hole of possibilities, what-if’s and could-be’s. Going down the rabbit hole can be a delight or a nightmare, depending on the nature of your exploration.
